Google Business Profile: The Fastest Local Win

Lesson 5 of 8 · 13 min

What the profile is

Google Business Profile is the free listing that appears when people search for a business by name, and in map results for searches like 'bike repair near me'. It shows your name, category, address, hours, phone number, website, photos and reviews. For a local business it is often seen by more people than the website, because it appears directly on the results page and in Google Maps.

You create or claim a profile at business.google.com. Once it is yours, you can edit most details directly in Google Search or Maps while signed in. Google asks you to verify that you really run the business. The method varies. A short video showing your premises, signage and equipment is common. Some edits are only shown after verification.

How local ranking works, in short

Google says local results are mainly based on three things. Relevance: how well your profile matches the search, which is why category and complete details matter. Distance: how far you are from the searcher or the place they named. You cannot change it. Prominence: how well known the business is, which includes reviews, links and mentions across the web. That is Google's own documented summary. Anything more precise is industry experience, not confirmed fact.

Reviews: ask everyone, reward no one

Reviews help people at the compare step, and they are part of prominence. Ask every customer, in a simple way: a QR code at the till, a short link in the invoice email. Reply to reviews, including critical ones, calmly and specifically. Google's review policy forbids offering discounts, gifts or payment in exchange for reviews. It also forbids asking only happy customers, often called review gating, and reviews with a conflict of interest, such as from employees or the owner.

The common mistake

Adding keywords to the business name. 'Velo Kessler – E-Bike Repair Winterthur' may feel clever. It breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to the profile being suspended. The same applies to a second profile for the same business to take more space on the map. Google allows one profile per business location. Use the real name, and describe your services in the services and description fields. If your real name already includes a service word, such as a shop called 'Winterthur Bike Repair', that is allowed, because it is the name on your sign.

Worked example
Lena opened her profile and found four problems. The friend who created it had named it 'Velo Kessler Bike Repair Winterthur'. The primary category was 'Bicycle store', although most of her income comes from repairs. The opening hours still showed last year's summer times. And there were three photos, all of the street. She changed the name to 'Velo Kessler', made 'Bicycle repair shop' the primary category, updated the hours, added eight photos of the workshop and the team, and put a QR code for reviews next to the till. Her phone number and address now match her website letter for letter.

Do this now

Search for your business name and open your profile. Check every field against the table above. Make sure your name, address and phone number match your website exactly. This trio is often called NAP, and consistent NAP helps Google trust your details. Add at least five real photos. Then print a small card with a QR code that links to your review form. Categories, citations and the local pack in depth are covered in the course Local SEO.

💡 Set special hours before every public holiday. A customer who arrives at a closed door because Google said 'open' rarely comes back, and may leave a review about it.

A plumber works from home and only visits customers at their address. How should the address be handled in Google Business Profile?
